According to the CCHIT website, more than two thirds of the complete electronic medical records (EMR) of providers and hospitals have successfully attested to the federal Meaningful Use criteria and qualified for incentives through the American Recovery Act (ARRA).  These EMR’s are dually certified under both ONC-ATCB and the CCHIT Certified programs of the Certification Commission of Health Information Technology.   

The most recent CDC data of November 2011 shows that EMR adoption has crossed a psychological tipping point. Here’s a key finding:

Electronic prescribing or e-prescribing (e-Rx) is not an entirely new concept in the healthcare industry.  It focuses on computer-based electronic generation, transmission and filling of a prescription, taking the place of paper and faxed prescriptions.  It allows a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant to electronically transmit a new prescription or renewal authorization to a community or mail-order pharmacy.

 National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, Farzad Mostashari, stated last week in a meeting of the Health IT Policy Committee that, “in 2012, Meaningful Use will soar.”  He told committee members that, “meaningful Use will continue to be the cornerstone of our activities.  We can expect to see the numbers continue to rise.”
